Changing Motorola RAZR’s Face plates – The Full Disassembly explained!!

This is going to be long so it is divided in parts. First the components needed and then the process. So here goes.

Part 1: Stuff you need

  1. Moto RAZR – Duh!!
  2. Torx-3 and Torx-5 screwdriver
  3. New faceplate and/or any other accessory you want to change (keypad, LCD etc)

Part 2: Taking Apart the RAZR phone – The back housing

Start from the battery cover of the razr. Push the small ‘button’/tab with your nail or a screwdriver and when the button is in the pressed state, push the cover along. This will take off the battery cover. Now take off the battery itself.

Keeping the battery compartment towards you, take out the two screws at the left and the right edge in the middle. Now take a card, a phone card or a credit card will do, and wedge it into the small opening between the lower half of razr phone on the battery side. Do it along the perimeter till the cover on the battery side is loose enough.

Now the cover housing will be loose, but do not pull it off just yet, as it is attached to the motherboard through a connector. Disconnect the connector of the moto razr using tweezers or similar tools so that the back of the housing is completely separate from the main assembly.

Now that the motherboard module has been detached, it is time to remove the circuitry from the housing. The separated module has three things, the moto razr phone motherboard, speakers and speaker housing.  Remove the razr speaker cover using a screwdriver through the two clips. After that, the motherboard can be easily lifted up. To remove the speakers, use tweezers as they may be glued to the back housing. Voila!! Your Moto RAZR’s back housing has been completely separated.

Take the back housing of the new razr faceplate, put in the speakers, then the motherboard and finally the speaker cover. The back housing is ready and kicking, now moving to the rest of the phone.
